The study of Biophysics at the Faculty of Science OU is closely related to the experimental research. Department of Physics guarantees the study of Biophysics at all degrees of higher education, i.e. bachelor’s degree (three-year study program in Physics, specialization in Biophysics), follow-up master’s degree (two-year study program in Applied Physics, specialization in Biophysics), and the doctoral degree (four-year study program in Biophysics and Physics of Nanostructures). In addition to the necessary physical and mathematical foundation, biophysics students acquire knowledge of subjects including plant physiology and ecophysiology, photosynthesis, biophysics of biological membranes, and gain experimental skills (methods of optical spectroscopy, chromatography, fluorescence of chlorophyll a, biochemical and separation methods, and many others). An essential part of the study is also the student’s own scientific work as part of final theses, which primarily involve experimental research based on the scientific focus of the Biophysics group.

The doctoral study program will certainly meet the expectations of those students who want to further develop their acquired knowledge and inclined towards a scientific path and are attracted by the possibility of carrying out their own research. Students will go through prospective interdisciplinary scientific fields with significant possibilities of use in the areas of basic and applied research. Using biophysical and biochemical methods, as well as molecular biology approaches, they can contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the processes that determine the resistance of organisms (especially higher plants) and are related to the ability to adapt to current climate change. During their studies, Ph.D. students involved in scientific projects and become valid members of our research team.

Our graduates can find employment in institutions dealing with basic and/or applied research and in laboratories focused on the analysis of biological samples (using chemical, biochemical and biological laboratory methods, e.g. hygiene stations, industrial and biomedical laboratories, laboratories in agriculture and food industry, water management, criminology, etc). Work in clinical and diagnostic laboratories requires completion of the relevant certification.

• scientific and research worker in the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, at universities and other research and development departments (graduate of follow-up master’s studies and Ph.D. studies)
• worker in institutions dealing with environmental issues (including state administration) (graduate of bachelor’s and follow-up master’s studies)
