During a one-month foreign internship in Sweden, our doctoral student Radomír Pech had the opportunity to deepen his knowledge in the field of non-target HPLC-MS analysis at the specialized metabolomics laboratories of Örebro University. Student was deeply impressed by not only the modern campus environment, laboratory equipment, and research facilities but also by the individual and welcoming approach of the faculty members and the mentor Dr. Victor Castro-Alves. Throughout the internship, Radek became an integral part of the team, actively contributing to research projects, including those in the field of medicine. In addition to primary research with plant material, he also devoted himself to the optimization of a method for the analysis of metabolites in human serum samples as part of a study dealing with the metabolomics of vegetarians and omnivores. The multicultural group, consisting of experts and students from Brazil, France, Spain, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, and Germany, provided an inspiring environment for the exchange of knowledge, improvement of interpersonal skills, and communication. Beyond professional growth, the doctoral student also had the opportunity to engage in social activities in Sweden, visiting Stockholm and cultural or natural sights nearby Örebro. The results and techniques acquired during the internship are a valuable contribution to the research activities of KFY OU and have the potential to advance our understanding of the role of low-molecular-weight metabolites in plant resilience to oxidative stress.
