Transformation of the environment through the perspective of biophysics at Scientists’ Night, 27/09/2024
The traditional nationwide event Noc Vedců, this year on the theme “TRANSFORMATION”, brought visitors to the PřF building in Hladnov, where the organizers managed to create a unique atmosphere in the dark with colored spotlights. Our group has prepared several activities for visitors. With the transformation of nature in autumn, our leaves have already started to turn into various bright colors – even the smallest could extract these colors in a mixing bowl and separate the individual plant dyes from each other using thin-layer chromatography. They could also observe how substances called anthocyanins can be colored in different shades of red/purple thanks to the change in the immediate surroundings – pH. For the older and more inquisitive visitors, we had prepared assignment cards where the influence of various factors (temperature, light and amount of CO2) on plant vitality was determined.
The interest in our activities and excursions to our laboratories was huge – thank you for your interest and we believe that we were able to bring you a little closer to the fun side of the work of scientists :).
