On Friday, September 22, 2023, a large group of Mensa CR members (106 participants aged 12-20) met with representatives of the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava in the afternoon. Young Mensans were introduced to the possibilities of study and scientific research across the physics disciplines offered by the Department of Physics. Mensans got to know both biophysical laboratories and research in the field of Biophysics and Physics of Nanostructures and the interesting and unique aspects of these studies. Physics teaching students Bc. Hana Honsejková and Bc. Ondřej Gonsorčík also introduced them to the possibilities of studying this program aimed at training future physics teachers.
The event was organized by doc. PaedDr. Jana Škrabánková, Ph.D., head of the Center for Research in Science Education and Talent Management, which has been cooperating with Mensa CR for a long time. Doc. Škrabánková coordinated the entire event in cooperation with colleagues Mgr. Ondřej Dlouhý, Ph.D., Mgr. František Karlický, Ph.D., Mgr. Irena Kurasová, Ph.D., Mgr. Daniel Vrábl, Ph.D. and Mgr. Miroslav Kolos, Ph.D. Among others, two of its vice-chairmen, Ing. Tomáš Blumenstein and Ing. Hana Kalusová, attended the meeting for the management of Mensa CR.
The Mensans really liked the visit to the Department of Physics. Some even expressed regret that, as current high school students, the University of Ostrava is too far for them to collaborate more, because they live in, for example, Jičín or Prague. We are pleased to have aroused the interest of these highly talented young people and to have received positive responses to our work. We also greatly appreciate the positive assessment of their supervisors who accompanied them to the Department of Physics.
